Summer Events & Performances
Summer movies and concerts are free and take place on the Hyde Bandstand. Concerts start at 6 PM unless otherwise noted. Movies start around dusk. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, and pack a picnic or support local Highlands restaurants. In case of rain, Friday concerts and movies move into the Hyde Gym. The Village Bank, in partnership with the Newton Highlands Neighborhood Area Council, is our premier sponsor for all summer activities on the Hyde Bandstand.

Concert: Jabbering Trout
Jabbering Trout began its trajectory as a high-energy, two-person, drum and guitar duo in Boston in the ‘90s. The band has since opened for acts including Aerosmith, Dave Matthews Band, the late Jeff Buckley, and Ani Difranco— then became a headline act known for catchy songwriting delivered live with energy. The band put out two well-received albums. Since the early ‘00s, Jabbering Trout has had many incarnations but has stayed true to its high-energy performance style.

Movie: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
"Bueller...? Bueller...?" In this endlessly quotable classic American teen comedy, a brash and charismatic high school senior, tired of skipping school to spend a boring day at home, is determined to enjoy an epic day roaring around his favorite Chicago sites, enlisting his best friend and girlfriend to join him on the adventure. Written and directed by John Hughes and starring Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck and Mia Sara. 1h 42m

Concert: The Ivory Rockers
The Ivory Rockers return with Dueling Pianos, a high-energy and interactive rock and roll show. Sing along to all your favorite, from pop or rock classics to Top 40.

Movie: Moana 2
This sequel to the beloved animated adventure film about the strong-willed daughter of a coastal village chief is set three years after the events in the first film. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania to find the lost island of Motufetu, break its curse, and reconnect the people of the ocean. Featuring the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Auli’i Cravalho and Jared Bush reprising their roles. 1h 45m

Shakespeare in the Playground—The World’s a Stage Players present "Henry IV, Part I"
This summer, The World’s a Stage Players (The Concord Players’ resident Shakespeare troupe) continue Shakespeare's eight-play cycle of English history. Henry IV, Part I is the first of Shakespeare's two plays centering on the reign of Henry IV. It is a story of power, honor and rebellion, depicting the King’s military battles, political conflicts with a rebellious faction of nobles, and the escapades of his son, who frequents the taverns in the company of disreputable characters.

Concert: Soft Touch Dance Band
Soft Touch is a classic big band with full horn and rhythm sections and two outstanding vocalists. This Waltham-based, 18-piece band specializes in swing-era music from the '40s to the '60s, plus Broadway hits and classic rock favorites. The retired professional musicians and serious amateurs who comprise the band donate their engagement fees toward college scholarships for local high school seniors who have excelled in music. The band is directed by Kirt Thaller.

Movie: Meatballs
The plot of this 1979 comedy film, directed by Ivan Reitman, centers on the wacky hijinks of a group of counselors-in-training counselors and campers at a budget summer camp. Tripper (Bill Murray) is the young-at-heart head counselor who befriends a lonely camper named Rudy. The film is notable for being Bill Murray's first film appearance in a starring role and for launching Reitman’s directing career. 1h 39m

Concert: Martin & Kelly
The talented duo of Jilly Martin and Ryan Brooks Kelly are standouts in today’s crossover country music scene. Their songs bridge the boundary between traditional and new country, and these New Englanders have made their mark in Nashville with highly acclaimed original music and great live performances. Their compelling songwriting, dynamic vocal harmonies, and stunning musicianship have earned them a spot as a support act for many traditional and mainstream country artists.

Movie: Sing 2
Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and his friends must persuade reclusive rock star Clay Calloway (Bono) to join them for the opening of a new show. This animated jukebox musical comedy sequel also features (the voices of) Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale, Chelsea Peretti, Nick Offerman, Eric Andre, Halsey and Pharrell Williams. 1h 50m

India Day Celebration
This annual, free, family-friendly event features Bollywood dance and music, cultural performances, a variety of vendors, and face painting. Celebrate Indian heritage and culture, and enjoy Indian delicacies from local food vendors. All are welcome! Sponsored by Newton Community Pride.

Concert: Koliba Afro Pop
Experience the infectious rhythms and sun-drenched summer grooves of high-spirited international dance music that will move your soul and your feet! Bandleader Mohamed Kalifa Camara brings together musicians from two continents to blend traditional and modern styles—including West African Rhythms, Hi Life, Reggae, Ska, Zouk and more. Koliba has headlined First Night® Boston for the past three years and has performed at the Harvard Square Mayfair.

Movie: Fever Pitch
Fever Pitch is an American romantic comedy about a schoolteacher (Jimmy Fallon) who falls for a business consultant (Drew Barrymore) who must compete with his passion for the Boston Red Sox. Directed by the Farrelly brothers, Fever Pitch is a remake of a British 1997 film of the same title. Nick Hornby, who had written the original 1992 book and the 1997 screenplay adaptation, acted as an executive producer for the American remake. 1h 44m

Concert: Matt Heaton Family Sing-along!
Bring the whole family to this fun outdoor concert! Matt makes music for parents and kids alike, from well-known classics to a few soon-to-be classics. He performs with panache on guitar and banjo. This event is recommended for ages 1-5. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Druker Auditorium at the Newton Free Library. Concert: The Newtalians
Boston-based The Newtalians reimagine your favorite Italian songs (and more) with modern, fresh arrangements ranging from ska to jazz, from rock to funk. Get ready to dance and sing along!

Movie: The Goonies
In an effort to save their homes from foreclosure, a group of young misfits set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate's long-lost treasure while being pursued by a family of criminals who are also after the treasure. This 1985 adventure comedy—now a cult classic—was written by Chris Columbus based on a story by Steven Spielberg. Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin (in his film debut), Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton, among others. 1h 54m

Concert: Boston Rock and Soul Revue
Boston Rock and Soul Revue is one of Boston's premier live bands, having played public and private events across New England for many years. With powerhouse vocals, an electric rhythm section that brings the funk, and the famous Hot Damn Horns, Boston Rock and Soul Revue gets people dancing at every event!

Movie: Paddington in Peru
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy who has gone missing from the Home for Retired Bears. With the Brown family in tow, Paddington is determined to solve the mystery, leading them on a thrilling adventure through the rainforests of the Amazon. The live-action animated adventure comedy features the voices of Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw and Imelda Staunton. 1h 46m

3rd Annual Newton Highlands Klezmer Dance!
Celebrate Jewish Heritage Month with the 3rd annual Newton Highlands Klezmer Dance! Dance (or simply listen) to the sounds of the Boston Festival of New Jewish Music All Stars, who represent the best in Jewish-influenced music by composers and performers who live in Greater Boston. Klezmer music is upbeat and lively, characterized by a mix of Eastern European folk melodies, Middle Eastern scales, and improvisational styles. Bring your friends, family and neighbors to join in the family-friendly fun!

Movie: Mufasa: The Lion King
This prequel to The Lion King blends live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery to tell the story of Mufasa. The lion cub, lost and alone, meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny. Concert: The Black Velvet Band
Boston's premier band for Irish and American music boasts almost 200 Irish and over 180 American songs on its playlist. Enjoy a great mix of Irish ballads, rebel songs, pub tunes, traditional and caeli, polkas, waltzes, foxtrots, jives, and set dances along with popular music from Sinatra to Springsteen to Smashmouth, Elvis to Eagles to Ed Sheeran — music from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and today,

Celebration of Queer Culture 2025
The Newton Celebration of Queer Culture (CQC) is a free, youth-organized Pride event created to bring the Newton community (and beyond!) together to highlight and celebrate queer culture.
CQC offers educational activities and programming for all ages and interests. Join us for Pride-centered art activities, queer history education, a panel discussion highlighting the intersectionality of the queer community, a queer art display, a queer family meetup, live performances, a resource fair, food, vendors, and queer joy! The live performance portion takes place from 1:30PM - 4PM.

Movie: Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is an action comedy movie based on the video game series of the same name. In this live action and animated sequel, Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a mysterious villain, Shadow, whose powers are unlike anything they have faced before. Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance if they are going to save humanity. Featuring Jim Carrey, James Marsden and Adam Pally, and the voices of Ben Schwarz, Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba. 1h 49m

Concert: Hurry Sundown
First time playing the Hyde Bandstand! Hurry Sundown is a Boston-area band that’s been playin’ country like rock—and rock like country—and earning a devoted following. The band’s repertoire includes songs by Bob Seger, Darius Rucker, John Denver, Poco, Sturgill Simpson, Bonnie Raitt, The Outlaws, Wings, Elton John, Cake, John Mayer, Steely Dan, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jackson Browne, The Who, Stealers Wheel, The Bee Gees, The Eagles, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Movie at the Lake: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The Hyde Community Center, in partnership with the Crystal Lake Conservancy and City of Newton Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, presents our Movie at the Lake — an outdoor movie at Crystal Lake. We’ll set up a large screen in the park next to the Crystal Lake Bathhouse, where we will screen the endlessly quotable American teen comedy, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. This is a free, family-friendly event, and all are welcome! Bring a low beach chair or blanket.
The film follows a brash and charismatic high school senior who gets bored during a sick day from school and is determined to turn the day into an epic adventure because, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.“ He enlists his best friend and girlfriend to join him, and hijinks ensue. Written and directed by John Hughes and starring Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck and Mia Sara, and Ben Stein as an economics teacher who utters one of the film’s most quotable lines, “Bueller? Bueller?”. [1h 42m]
Crystal Lake Bathhouse will be open until 10 PM so moviegoers have access to restrooms.

Movie: Inside Out 2
This animated sequel features Riley growing up and experiencing brand new, more complex emotions. As Riley tries to adapt to being a teenager, her old emotions struggle with the possibility of being replaced. Featuring the voices of Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, Tony Hale, Lewis BlackAyo Edebiri and Phyllis Smith, among others. 1h 36m.

Concert: The Reminisants
The Reminisants have been entertaining audiences of all ages throughout New England since 1973. The band specializes in oldies from the 1950s through the ’90s, playing a collection of great music for all musical tastes and generations. The band was formed by three Waltham High School friends, Dom Viscione, Mike Joyal and Fran Doorakian, and has since expanded to the current six-member group.

Newton Juneteenth Celebration
Bring your kids, friends and parents and join us for a day filled with fun, food, and community spirit ! This free outdoor celebration will feature Reggae Mike's Caribbean food truck, live music from Devlin Scott and others, DJ Firestarta, drumming and dance performances, shopping local Black-owned businesses, and activities for all ages. This event marks Newton's 4th annual celebration to commemorate 160 years of emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Don't miss out on this special day of unity and joy!
Event partners include the Families Organizing for Racial Justice (FORJ), Newton Coalition of Black Residents (NCBR), and FORJ NNHS. The event is made possible through the generous support from FORJ, the Harmony Foundation, Village Bank, and a Linda Plaut Festival of the Arts Grant from Newton Community Pride, in partnership with the City of Newton's Cultural Development department.

Movie: Panda Bear in Africa
In this animated adventure film, a panda cub named Pang travels from China to Africa to rescue his dragon friend, Jielong, who has been kidnapped. His journey takes him to a world that is different from what he knows and filled with danger. Along the way, he encounters hippos, dancing ostriches, gorillas and a fierce lion, and is befriended by a monkey named Jojo and a hyena named Niala. 1h 24m

Concert: The Gringo Kings
Inspired by the great salsa groups of Cuba, The Gringo Kings has evolved a style of music that takes the swinging creativity of Jazz and broils it under the heat of Latin rhythms. The band plays covers along with sometimes fiery, sometimes irreverent originals penned by the group’s leader and tenor saxophonist, Ed Harlow.

Movie: Dog Man
Dog Man, half dog and half man, is sworn to protect and serve as he doggedly pursues the feline supervillain Petey the Cat in this animated superhero comedy starring (the voices of) Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, Stephen Root, Billy Boyd and Ricky Gervais. The film loosely adapts the first, third and seventh Dog Man graphic novels by Dav Pilkey. 1h 30m

Concert: Surefire Band
Surefire Band plays high-spirited country music in the Boston area. On May 17, they kicked off the Linda Plaut Festival of the Arts in "true Country Western style." Looking for a line dance? This is your band!

Newton Theatre Company Presents The Monologue Project: Remembering the Goldstein Family
The Hyde Community Center will host the Newton Theatre Company’s tribute to the Goldstein family—the Newton family of four who died of carbon monoxide poisoning on December 25, 2024 at their New Hampshire home. Matthew Goldstein was a founding member of NTC, and he and his daughter Valerie were actors with the local theatre group. Anyone who would like to participate by sharing songs, stories or memories of the Goldstein family should email melissa@newtontheatrecompany.com.
The event features a community gathering beginning at 6pm (attendees should pack a picnic dinner or can purchase food at one of the Highlands restaurants), followed by The Monologue Project at 7pm.
Admission is free but please RSVP to NTC with the number of people in your party. Due to rain, the event will be held in the Hyde Community Center gym.

Newton Rotary Dog Fest & Parade
Calling all dog owners and dog lovers! Get ready for a paw-some day full of tail wagging fun and treats for dogs and their humans. Dress up your pup and join the dog parade. The Rotary Club of Newton, in partnership with the Hyde Community Center, presents this pet-centered outdoor event at the Hyde Playground. Vist the Rotary Club’s website to donate in support of Caring Canines Visiting Therapy Dogs. Moved to Sunday, May 11, due to weather.

Newton Taiwan Day
Mark your calendar for this family-friendly annual event. Each year the community comes together to enjoy vibrant performances, delicious food, and a joyful celebration of Taiwanese culture.

Newton Special Election
Newton will hold a special election to elect a candidate to fill the vacant Ward 7 position on the School Committee. Residents from all wards can vote in this election. Registered voters in Ward 5-Precinct 2 and Ward 6-Precinct 3 vote at the Hyde.
Astronomy Night
Newton Highlands Neighborhood Area Council and Astronomer Alex Trunnell present Astronomy Night at the Hyde Playground. View planets through a telescope and hear stories about the night sky at this free family-friendly event. Rain date: February 7.

Newton Highlands Soup Social (indoors)
The annual Newton Highlands Soup Social is a free community event featuring hot gourmet soups and crusty breads that warm up a cold winter night. Part of Newton Community Pride’s WinterFEST, the Soup Social is a delectable evening of fresh soups and extras from local restaurants and grocers.
Surefire Band will perform, and the community is invited to enjoy Brighter Ignited Interactive Art, an illuminated and traveling art exhibit that activates light from the community and encourages us to explore how we can stand up for what we believe in. It is interactive and accessible for all ages.
The Soup Social and Surefire Band performance will be held inside the Hyde Gym. The Brighter Ignited Interactive Art exhibit will be on Lincoln Street in front of the Hyde Center.
We are grateful to local restaurants providing delicious dishes for everyone to enjoy. Closed for Renovations
The Hyde gym will be closed beginning Monday, December 23 at 7AM for a new coat of polyurethane. Beginning December 26 at 7AM, the Hyde hallway floor will be replaced. While this work is being performed, there will be no admittance to the Hyde. Anyone visiting the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office during this time will use a separate entrance from Erie Avenue.

Free Puppet Show - The Fairy Circus presented by the Tanglewood Marionettes
After trick or treating in the Highlands’ Lincoln Street business district, bring the kids indoors for a lively performance by the Tanglewood Marionettes. Featuring over 20 beautifully hand-crafted marionettes, The Fairy Circus is a showcase for turn-of-the-century-style trick puppetry. The puppets will dance, play instruments, juggle, contort, transform, and fly through the air with the greatest of ease, all to the best-loved music of favorite composers. Perfect for families with children in grades pre-K - 2, but older children may enjoy it too.
The Fairy Circus is performed by a solo puppeteer. The presentation begins with a puppetry demonstration, and concludes with a Q&A session. Running time: 40 minutes.

Movie: Kung Fu Panda 4
After Po is tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior, while a wicked sorceress plans to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm. The all-star voice cast includes Jack Black, Awkwafina, Viola Davis, Dustin Hoffman, Bryan Cranston and Seth Rogen. (1h 34m)
